Deepwells Farm County Park: This former estate was built for a descendant of Richard Smith, the founder of Smithtown, and would go through a number of hands, including those of William J. Gaynor, Mayor of New York City from 1910 to 1913. The property contains two 125-foot wells, inspiring the name, and a nineteenth-century Greek-Revival mansion. The property is managed by the Deepwells Historical Society, which lists events on their website, at deepwells.org .
St. James General Store: This general store is still in operation, and even offers a post office sub-station for area residents. The property has been saved from conversion to a residence many times, and has been acquired by Suffolk County and New York State as a historic preservation site. Reflecting a 30-year period from 1880-1910, the store is staffed by women in Gibson Girl outfits who serve as tour guides, interpreters, and salespeople. The store hosts book signings, historical talks, and skilled craftspeople sharing their trades.
Three Villages Historical Society: This society operates a museum, historic home site, and archives, exploring the history of Stony Brook, St. James, and the other areas that make up the Three Villages. They list events, photos, and more information about area history on their website, at Âthreevillagehistoricalsociety.org .
The Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages: This 9-acre open-air museum contains seven buildings and barns and an extensive collection of carriages from the 1800s. The Museum’s permanent collection includes a massive catalogue of Hudson River School painter William Sidney Mount. longislandmuseum.org .
